Villefranche-sur-Mer - view of the town from the harbour

What better way to relax after a day’s mountain biking in the hills behind than sipping a drink in the fishing port of Villefranche-sur-Mer, overlooking the stunning Cap Ferrat peninsula. This is surely one of the most charming harbours in the Cote d’Azur. Take a stroll along the covered, medieval Rue Obscure which runs beneath the houses of the town. It’s hard to believe that this idyllic hideaway is one of the closest resorts to Nice.

Art and Culture in Villefranche-sur-Mer

You can see why artists adore this town and take over the quirky little houses which are perched on the hillside overlooking the bay. Jean Cocteau decorated the tiny medieval Chapelle de St-Pierre in 1957 with frescoes which he described as ‘ghosts of colours’.

There are a series of art museums here which house works by Volti, Henri Goetz, Christine Boumeester and Picasso so definitely worth a visit.

Don’t miss the Bouillabaisse in Villefranche-sur-Mer

Bouillabaisse is a delicious and nutritious Provencal fish soup, and Villefranche-sur-Mer is one of the best places in the south of France to try it. The famous La Mere Germaine restaurant has been dishing it up since 1938!
