Morzine is the destination of choice for mountain bikers looking for alpine thrills and spills. The resort has a party atmosphere during the summer months with some of the best trails, restaurants and night-life of all the French resorts.
The Trails
Located about an hour’s drive from Geneva airport, Morzine has two main lifts which provide access to ten permanent downhill trails (and counting) and access to dozens more trails across the Portes du Soleil area. The Super-Morzine lift takes you up to the Avoriaz area with its five DH tracks and the freeride trails of the Chatel bikepark. The Pleney lift was out of action in 2013 due to a fire, but Morzine is back to full power now. This lift takes you up to trails aimed mainly at beginner to intermediate riders, but the gradient and the notorious braking bumps still make this challenging riding for most people, especially in the wet.
Cap Canaveral – Downhill Trail – Blue
One of the best trails in Morzine if you like fast flowy berms and jumps is the blue Cap Canaveral track on Super Morzine. A feature-rich snaking trail over 315 m of vertical drop is accessible to all levels. A nice sequence of berms leads into some well-built jumps including a huge table-top and a hip jump. The trail then drops into the trees before emerging with a superb view over Morzine below. If you’re an experienced rider you can hit it fast and enjoy styling it up on the jumps, but if you’re a more tentative rider, hit it a few times and you’ll find this trail a great confidence builder.
The Pleney – Downhill Trail – Black
3.2 km, 500 m of vertical drop, it’s a fast, steep, white-knuckle ride. This ex-world cup course is steeped in great YouTube mountain biking moments and it feels a lot steeper, bumpier and intense than it looks on the telly! Starting near the restaurant in La Mouille, the trail drops down to the Pleney cable car station. Super steep, the track snakes in and out of the trees and is broken up with jumps and table tops, hips onto roots, and a rush into a catch-all berm. Some people travel to Morzine just to ride this trail and the more you ride it, the more you’ll love it.
Man-made trails aside, Morzine is a playground for many riders who take advantage of the awesome natural terrain. The town has a number of well-equipped bike shops offering well-maintained freeride bikes for hire. The Portes du Soleil is a big draw for professional riders and teams and there is always a good atmosphere in town.
