Heli-Skiing Petit Combin, Valais, Switzerland

Le Petit Combin is a 3672 m peak located on the border between the Val de Bagnes and the Vallée du Grand-Saint-Bernard. Looking at the mountain from Verbier, it’s situated to the right of its big brother Le Grand Combin (4314 m). The summit is noticeably flat with steep snowy slopes down its north face.

From the summit a jaw-dropping 360 degree panorama takes in the Mont Blanc and Cervin mountains with views over the Vaud and Bernese Alps. Looking south you can see the imposing glacier that flows down the north face of the Grand Combin.

The Heli-skiing on Petit Combin is nicely varied and there are lots of descents possible depending on your ability and the conditions on the day.

The two classic lines are both epic backcountry descents and aren’t particularly difficult. Heli-dropped on the summit you either ski down to the village of Fionney (1491 m) via the Corbassière glacier or to the village of Bourg-St-Pierre (1632 m) via the Boveire glacier. A third descent over the Follas glacier is becoming more popular, but it requires there to be enough snow to cover the crevasses.

More advanced off-piste skiers can also take on the north face of the Petit Combin. It’s highly engaging and difficult skiing and as a result you’re more likely to have the run to yourself. You can also combine the heli-skiing with ski touring to access some remote and pristine runs. A maximum of 2 hours skinning up the Col des Otanes or the Col d’Ane leads to some steep skiing itineraries that expert powder hounds will love.
